The emergence or emergent layer is the lowest layer of the skyline. The word emergent refers to it being the interface between the groundline and the skyline, as unlike ground layers, it is structurally porous, with 20% of its surface area empty. In most places, the emergence is between 1.5 kilometers and 3 kilometers above the ground layer (231 words), but at its lowest points is under 200 meters above the ground, and at its highest points over 5 kilometers above the ground. The emergent layer has local sublayers and vertical branches. The emergence is composed primarily of levitating moss. It is unknown how it remains fixed vertically, and this is an area of active research, as levitation failures (409 words) are some of the most destructive natural disasters on the ground layer. A majority of the world’s crops requiring regular light are grown in the emergence due to its relative accessibility by skyscraper lifts.
